Empowering Our Health, Rights, and Future: A Call to Action from Black Women for 2024

Black Women’s Votes: A Critical Call to Action in 2024

For many Black women, the year 2024 is shaping up to be a watershed moment fraught with unprecedented challenges that affect not only our health and livelihoods but also the very fabric of our communities. The stakes in this election season have never been higher. In just the first half of this year, we’ve witnessed federal and state policies, along with Supreme Court decisions, that have far-reaching implications for our health, autonomy, safety, and democracy. With rising inflation, housing insecurity, and the relentless impacts of climate change disproportionately affecting our communities, the urgency of participating in the upcoming elections cannot be overstated.

The Power of the Black Woman’s Vote

Let’s be clear: the participation of Black women in the democratic process is not merely a historical footnote but a fundamental pillar that upholds democracy in the United States. Black women have long been at the forefront of social change, armed with the power of our votes. As we approach the elections, we must rally together, encouraging one another to vote with the conviction that our very lives depend on it. Every vote is more than just a mark on a ballot; it is an assertion of our rights, values, and priorities.

The Role of the Black Women’s Health Imperative

In response to these pressing issues, the Black Women’s Health Imperative (BWHI) is doubling down on its commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by Black women. BWHI utilizes innovative programs, comprehensive research, and strong policy advocacy to further the health and wellness of Black women and girls. A key resource we’ve developed is the bi-annual publication, the Black Women Vote 2024 Health Policy Voters Guide & Candidate Checklist. This guide helps voters understand their options and aligns electoral choices with the issues that matter most to our communities. But don’t stop at reading the guide—take action! Make a plan to get to the polls and encourage others in your community to do the same. Every vote magnifies our voices and drives the vital changes we need.

Voting Down the Ballot on November 5th

Mark your calendars: November 5th is a critical date for our democracy. This is our opportunity to elect representatives at local, state, and national levels who prioritize our health, safety, and rights. Since the 2020 election, more than 400 bills have been introduced across nearly every state with the express intention of limiting voting access, particularly in communities of color. Our rights to healthcare, the ballot, and family protection are at risk. This election is not just about choosing leaders; it is about selecting advocates for policies that will safeguard our reproductive freedoms, increase healthcare access, and provide economic security.

A Critical Moment in History

This election is one of the most consequential events of our lifetime. The myriad intersectional issues impacting our communities underscore an urgent need for transformative leadership. Recent restrictions on reproductive freedoms across various states have already had severe implications for Black women, exacerbating existing health disparities. Limitations on abortion and family planning services, in addition to diminished maternal healthcare support and protections for healthcare professionals, directly threaten our ability to lead healthy lives.

Use Your Vote as a Voice for Change

We urge all Black women to utilize our Black Women Vote 2024 Health Policy Voters Guide as a tool for empowerment. This resource is invaluable in helping you navigate the policies and issues critical to our communities. Our vision is that all Black women will experience optimal health in a society that truly values health equity and social justice. When we show up to the polls, we assert our power. Your voice matters, and your vote is essential.

Standing Together for Our Future

As we approach November 5th, let’s remember that we are engaged in a struggle for our lives and futures. This election season is not just a routine political process; it’s a rallying cry for our health, rights, and the collective future of our communities. Let’s stand together, united in purpose, as we urge every Black woman to come to the polls and make her voice heard. Every ballot cast is a step toward a healthier, more equitable world for all of us. The time for change is now, and the power to ignite that change is firmly in our hands.
