The Art of Packing the Perfect Carry-On Bag: Tips and Essentials
I’ve always believed that a vacation begins the moment you start to pack your bag. For me, that sense of excitement and anticipation kicks in as soon as I gather my belongings. After years of jet-setting around the globe, I’ve honed my skills in packing the ideal carry-on bag. If you have a trip coming up—especially an overnight or long flight—here are some carry-on essentials you won’t want to forget. Surprising Carry-On Essentials
Ziplock Bags
One of my most valuable packing hacks is the humble Ziplock bag. I typically pack 2-5 gallon-sized Ziplock bags in my carry-on. If you travel with kids, you’ll find these bags to be absolutely essential; but even for solo travelers, they’re handy for so many reasons. Whether it’s holding leftover food, dirty clothes, or those miscellaneous odds-and-ends that always seem to accumulate in the bottom of your bag, they offer a quick and easy solution to keep your carry-on organized. Plus, if they don’t get used on the flight, I can guarantee they’ll come in handy at some point during the trip.
Liquid IV
Flying can be incredibly dehydrating due to the cabin pressure and low humidity. That’s why I always make sure to bring along Liquid IV. This hydration multiplier hydrates you faster than regular water, making it a must-have during flights or shortly after landing. Staying hydrated not only benefits your skin, but also helps keep your immune system strong during travel. (Bonus: use the code ChloeBArnold25 for a discount!)
Face Spray
To combat the dry cabin air, I love to travel with a good face spray that hydrates your skin and leaves you feeling refreshed. This elixir is perfect for a quick spritz mid-flight, especially when you can’t realistically wash your face. They even make smaller versions for easier packing.
Toothbrush
There’s something about brushing my teeth that instantly rejuvenates me during a flight. However, it’s important to remember that you cannot bring full-size toothpaste on board, so I recommend packing a travel-size tube or opting for one-time-use toothbrushes for convenience.
Safety Pins
You never know when a strap might break or something might need a quick fix during your travels. That’s why I always keep a couple of safety pins in my bag. They can be real lifesavers!
Bonus: Sleep Gummies
If you’re taking an overnight flight, I highly recommend sleep gummies. Personally, I prefer these kids’ sleep gummies because they don’t leave me drowsy after waking. I believe in powering through and not napping upon arrival at my destination, so I do everything I can to ensure quality sleep during my flight.
Classic Carry-On Essentials
While the surprising essentials can make a trip more comfortable, there are some classic items that you shouldn’t forget either.
Chargers
It may be tempting to toss all your chargers into your checked bag, but I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to keep at least your phone charger in your carry-on. I usually bring my computer and camera chargers too, ensuring I’m never unintentionally cut off from vital electronics.
Prescriptions
To safeguard against unforeseen issues, I always keep any necessary medication in my carry-on. If your checked luggage gets delayed or lost, you’ll be glad you have your meds readily available.
An Extra Outfit
It’s wise to pack an extra outfit in case of spills or delays, especially if you land and need to freshen up before a meeting or event. You never know when you’ll need a quick wardrobe change.
Jewelry and Valuables
I always carry my jewelry and designer items with me. It’s not worth the risk of losing something you love in a checked bag, which can be randomly selected for inspection, or worse, get lost entirely.
Electronics
Lastly, any essential electronics—like my computer and camera—are always packed in my carry-on. This ensures they remain safe from being damaged or squished.
A New Essential: The Perfect Carry-On Bag
After years of relying on the same carry-on bag, it was finally time for an upgrade. I recently switched to the Josefina travel bag and cannot believe I didn’t make this change sooner! This beautiful bag is designed in Paris and crafted from buttery-soft yet durable leather. It’s spacious enough to accommodate my computer, and its multiple pockets keep everything organized.
What I love most is that this travel bag has quickly become my go-to for everyday activities as well, where I pack diapers, backup outfits for my kids, snacks, and toys.
If you need a solid rolling suitcase, I recommend checking out this one or this set that I’ve relied on for years.
