Barefoot College International: Celebrating International Women’s Day with Award-Winning Film “The Light of Women”

International Women’s Month Recap

March is a month dedicated to celebrating and advancing women’s rights, and here at Barefoot College International, it holds a particularly special significance. Our social media platforms were alive with insightful posts celebrating International Women’s Month, as we took this opportunity to highlight our commitment to uplifting women through education and workforce training. Our mission is not only driven by the belief that every individual deserves equitable access to educational opportunities but also by the recognition that empowering women is essential for sustainable community growth—benefiting both the economy and the environment.

The Economic Impact of Women’s Empowerment

Research underscores that when women are given equal and equitable opportunities, it positively influences global economies. According to a report by McKinsey & Company, if we pursue gender equality earnestly, global GDP could rise by an impressive $13 trillion by 2030. More than just a financial statistic, this figure indicates how investing in women’s education and empowerment can lead to better health standards, improved quality of life, and vital advancements in Climate Justice initiatives across the globe.

It is clear that empowering women is not merely a moral obligation but a crucial investment for future generations. When women thrive, communities, economies, and ecosystems flourish.

Celebrating Inspirational Inclusivity

In honor of this year’s UNDP theme, “Inspire Inclusion,” we reached out to our dedicated Solar Mama alumni and international staff to participate in a campaign that encourages visible support for universal gender equity and social justice. We were thrilled to receive over 50 heartfelt photos from our community—incredible testimonials of solidarity as participants showed their support by forming heart shapes with their hands. These images are a powerful reminder of our commitment to ensuring that rural and indigenous women have the necessary resources to succeed.

This collective action not only highlights the importance of women’s roles in societies but also embodies our ongoing pledge to bring inclusion and empowerment to the forefront of our mission.

Barefoot College: Addressing Needs of Marginalized Women

At the heart of our initiatives are specialized programs designed to facilitate greater entrepreneurial opportunities for women. Our solar, livelihood, and tech-based programs are tailored specifically to meet the unique challenges faced by marginalized women. By equipping them with essential skills through education and vocational training, we empower them to become change-makers within their communities. Our vision of women’s empowerment revolves around unlocking their potential and championing their rights, a commitment that is stronger than ever.

A Cinematic Triumph: "The Light of Women"

In a remarkable celebration of women’s stories, we are excited to congratulate the team behind “The Light of Women” (La Lumiere des Femmes) for winning the Best Documentary Award at the prestigious Cinequest Film Festival in California. Produced by ARTE and Federation Studio, this inspiring 90-minute documentary chronicles the transformative journey of the Solar Mamas in Senegal.

The film takes viewers on an emotional journey—from the community-led selection process and the groundbreaking training days, all the way to the moment when these empowered women illuminate their remote villages using solar energy for the very first time. Directed by Elise Darblay & Antoine Depeyre and produced by Isabelle Dagnac, it is a powerful testament to what can be achieved when women are given the tools and support they need to thrive.

Gratitude and Call to Action

As we conclude this month of celebration and advocacy, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stands by our side in support of our initiatives. We appreciate the kind words and encouragement on Women’s Day as well as those received about the documentary’s award. Your support fuels our mission and empowers us to continue pushing for positive change.

If you would like to contribute to our programs and help us expand our reach in providing livelihood training, education, and resources to women in need, we invite you to join our efforts. Together, we can make a difference that resonates across communities worldwide.

Thank you for being a part of this powerful movement towards gender equity and empowerment.

Together, let us continue to inspire inclusion and uplift women everywhere. The future is bright when women shine!
