Join Our Global Giving Campaign: Help Barefoot College International in Reducing Fossil Fuel Emissions

Fossil Fuels: Let’s Make Them a Thing of the Past

In an age where climate change looms ever larger, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy is not just an option; it is a necessity. The detrimental effects of fossil fuel consumption—pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat destruction—are undeniable. Therefore, communities around the globe are searching for means to harness sustainable practices, especially in the Global South, where the need for accessible and clean energy is most pressing. Our campaign, Train Solar Mamas to Electrify Communities, aims to bring solar energy to remote areas while empowering women as the backbone of this initiative. Join us in helping these communities bypass fossil fuels altogether by supporting our efforts on the Global Giving platform.

Campaign Overview

Our innovative campaign focuses specifically on providing solar energy solutions to marginalized communities in the Global South. By prioritizing women in this process, we not only foster gender equality but also create sustainable ecosystems for these communities. Women, often the hardest hit by energy poverty, become Solar Mamas—trained solar engineers capable of installing and maintaining solar energy systems. This approach not only reduces the reliance on fossil fuels but also encourages economic growth and communal empowerment.

The Barefoot Solar Program

At the heart of our initiative lies the Barefoot Solar Program—a unique solar engineering program aimed at increasing the number of productive hours available in the day for the world’s most marginalized communities. By providing access to clean energy, we significantly reduce dependence on kerosene, which has detrimental health and environmental impacts. In fact, our program has achieved a remarkable 97% reduction in kerosene use through the replacement of oil-fueled lamps with solar lights.

This sustainability-driven approach not only eliminates harmful emissions but also safeguards community health by minimizing smoke-induced illness and reducing the risk of accidental fires. For context, approximately 4 in 5 people in sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. Through our Solar Mama training program, we have successfully brought light to 175,000 households, thereby not only reducing the impact of fossil fuel usage but also improving health metrics within these areas.

Empowering Communities to Bypass Fossil Fuels

Since 2015, we have made it our mission to provide women with opportunities to thrive through our solar engineering program. Over 3,500 women from more than 90 countries have successfully undergone training, returning to their villages equipped with the knowledge and skills to install and maintain solar systems independently. Each Solar Mama typically provides solar energy solutions to around 400 direct beneficiaries, creating a ripple effect that spreads the benefits of renewable energy throughout the community.

The curriculum is designed to cater to illiterate and semi-literate women, making the program accessible to individuals from various education backgrounds. This feature ensures that knowledge of solar technology remains within the community, allowing for long-term sustainability. Additionally, Solar Mamas often step into leadership roles, training others and ensuring that technological autonomy is achieved at the grassroots level.

In tandem with our ENRICH curriculum, we provide holistic training that includes both technical skills and entrepreneurial insight. This dual focus promotes agency and builds local capacity, allowing community members to leverage their knowledge in meaningful ways.

Conclusion

Transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a progressive step toward ensuring a sustainable future. Our campaign to train women as Solar Mamas is not just about energy access—it’s about empowerment, health, and community resilience. By supporting our initiative, you can become part of a transformative movement that is making fossil fuels a thing of the past.

Thank you for considering how you can help make a concrete difference. Every contribution, big or small, plays a vital role in this essential transition. Support our campaign today, and stand with us in making renewable energy a reality for remote communities. Together, we can illuminate lives while leaving fossil fuels behind for good!
